How I Celebrated Ice Cream For Breakfast Day, 2017

I have actively resisted the idea of waffles with ice cream for breakfast in the past. I used to see it on New York diner menus all the time, but it just felt too decadent. That taboo has now been broken, at least for one day a year.

Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is a fairly new tradition. A woman in Rochester, New York named Florence Rappaport invented it in the 1960’s, to make a snowy day special for her children. Her children spread the tradition, and now ice cream shops all over the country are encouraging people to eat ice cream for breakfast, in their jammies, on the first Saturday in February.

Here in the SF Bay Area, Humphry Slocombe’s signature flavor is the perfect menu! Secret Breakfast is an awesome combination of bourbon ice cream, with cornflake cookies. I have never actually eaten it for breakfast; until recently it was only available at the Humphry Slocombe shops in San Francisco. I have been known to wait in long lines to get my fix of this creamy goodness, but I did manage to shower and dress myself, and have some oatmeal first.

I’ve also certainly been known to spike my French toast batter with bourbon, which isn’t so far from ice cream base, really…
